North Charleston: Dating App Meetup Ends in Armed Robbery and Gunfire

A man was arrested nearly a month after robbing and threatening someone he met through a dating app, an encounter that escalated into gunfire.

What was supposed to be a simple meetup arranged through a dating app turned into chaos inside an apartment complex in North Charleston's Charleston Farms neighborhood. Officers, alerted by neighbors, responded to reports of armed robbery and gunfire.

On scene, the picture was clear: a meeting set up online had served as cover for something far more serious than a simple theft. The victim was held against their will before the confrontation spilled over into an exchange of gunfire.

It took investigators nearly a month to identify and arrest the suspect, 21-year-old Jakeil Idell Baskins. He now faces multiple serious charges: first-degree assault and battery, armed robbery, kidnapping, and weapon possession.

The case is a reminder that a meeting arranged online — even in what feels like a private, controlled setting like an apartment — offers no real guarantee of safety. Far from protecting the victim, the closed-off space can actually leave them more isolated once things go wrong.
