French-Speaking Switzerland: Seven Arrested Over Fake Police Officer Scams Targeting the Elderly

Seven people have been arrested in French-speaking Switzerland in connection with fake police officer scams that caused more than 88,000 francs in losses, mostly to elderly victims.

The fake police officer scam is as old as it is effective: a phone call, an authoritative voice claiming to be law enforcement, a convincing security-related pretext, then a demand for cash or jewelry to be handed over urgently to a courier sent to collect it.

Over two days, June 13 and 14, authorities carried out seven arrests across the cantons of Neuchâtel, Vaud, Geneva, and Valais, dismantling a network suspected of primarily targeting elderly victims. Total losses exceed 88,000 Swiss francs.

Among those arrested were four women and three men, several of whom served as couriers tasked with collecting cash or valuables from victims. With the exception of a 21-year-old man from Vaud, all were French nationals aged 18 to 23.

Investigations continue to determine the full scope of the network and identify any additional victims who haven't yet come forward.
