Germany: five young defendants on trial for luring and attacking gay men through a dating app

In Germany, five young defendants aged 15 to 20 are on trial after allegedly luring gay men through a dating app before assaulting, robbing and insulting them with homophobic abuse.

A new case in Germany is drawing attention to violence targeting gay men through dating platforms. According to Deutschlandfunk, a trial has opened before the regional court in Frankfurt an der Oder against five young defendants accused of setting traps for gay men through a dating app.

The report says the accused, aged between 15 and 20, allegedly pretended to show sexual or romantic interest in order to lure victims to remote places. Once there, the men were allegedly beaten, robbed and subjected to homophobic insults. The article adds that the alleged attackers also filmed the acts.

The case is presented as part of a broader pattern. Deutschlandfunk notes that another member of the group was sentenced at the end of the previous week to a two-year suspended sentence. The report also says that several similar crimes have already been recorded in Germany and elsewhere in Europe.

According to the same source, some perpetrators frame these attacks under the label "Pedo-Hunting", misusing child-protection narratives to justify violence against sexual minorities. Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution sees this as a growing tendency in certain far-right circles.

The case is another reminder that a fake profile or a seemingly ordinary meeting through a dating app can be used as a setup for targeted violence. It also highlights how homophobia, robbery and public humiliation can be combined in organized attacks.
