Medellín warns of dating app robbery schemes after 173 foreign victims reported in 2026

Authorities in Medellín say 173 foreign visitors have been victims of theft in 2026, with some criminal groups allegedly using dating apps, drugs and nightlife areas to target tourists.

Authorities in Medellín, Colombia, are warning about dangerous robbery schemes targeting foreign visitors, including cases linked to dating apps, nightlife areas and the use of substances to incapacitate victims.

According to El Tiempo, Medellín has recorded 173 foreign victims of theft so far in 2026. Officials say the real number may be difficult to measure because some victims do not report the crimes, often due to embarrassment, fear or the circumstances surrounding the encounter.

The reported cases are especially linked to tourist and entertainment zones such as El Poblado, Laureles, Provenza and Parque Lleras, where foreign visitors, digital nomads and nightlife seekers are more exposed to organized robbery networks.

One of the most concerning methods involves criminals using dating apps to contact men, build trust and arrange in-person meetings. Once the victim is in a vulnerable situation, suspects allegedly use high-potency drugs or other substances to leave the person defenseless.

Authorities recently dismantled a group known as “Las Tinderianas”, accused of contacting victims through dating apps before stealing phones, bank details, passwords and money. Officials estimate that this group may have stolen more than 400 million Colombian pesos from victims of several nationalities, including visitors from Spain, the United States, Italy, Argentina, Mexico and Norway.

Medellín authorities also reported arrests linked to another group accused of targeting foreigners in areas around Provenza and Parque Lleras through surveillance and street robbery tactics. Investigators reportedly used victim interviews and video evidence to identify suspects.

This situation shows how dating app risks can extend far beyond romance scams or fake profiles. In some cases, the danger can move from online contact to physical assault, drugging, theft, extortion or kidnapping.

NoDuble advises travelers to be extremely cautious when meeting someone from a dating app abroad. Meet only in public places, avoid isolated locations, do not leave drinks unattended, protect your phone and banking apps, tell someone where you are going and leave immediately if the situation feels suspicious.
