Bavaria: Fake Payment Link Scam Narrowly Avoided in Kleinanzeigen Sale

A German seller narrowly avoided a five-figure loss after nearly handing over his bank details through a fake payment link during a Kleinanzeigen sale.

It started with a heating unit listed for sale on Kleinanzeigen, Germany's leading classifieds platform. A buyer came forward quickly, flatly refusing PayPal and insisting on using the platform's own built-in payment system instead — a request that, on the surface, even sounded more secure.

The buyer then sent a link, presented as the official login page for the payment system. The seller, with no reason to be suspicious, entered his credentials along with his card details, including the security code. That was exactly the moment the scammers had been waiting for: the link actually led to a fake page designed to intercept that information.

The scammer immediately took over the seller's account, changing the password and the associated email address. A five-figure loss was narrowly avoided, the fraud caught just before the money was actually debited.

The investigation continues, with the perpetrator still unidentified at this stage. The case illustrates an increasingly common twist on this type of fraud: it's no longer the item for sale that's the target, but the bank details themselves, obtained through a fake payment system that perfectly mimics the platform's real interface.
