Nazaré, Portugal: Man Arrested for Extorting €16,000 by Threatening to Leak Intimate Images

A man has been arrested in Portugal for extorting roughly €16,000 from a victim by threatening to publish intimate images and conversations shared online.
The mechanics of this form of extortion, known as sextortion, are as simple as they are effective: obtain intimate images or messages, then threaten to make them public unless the victim pays up.
That's the scheme Leiria's judicial police are pinning on a 59-year-old man, with no known prior record but suspected of similar conduct elsewhere. According to the investigation, he gradually raised his financial demands on the victim, threatening each time to leak the intimate material in his possession if she refused to pay. In total, the extorted amount is believed to reach around €16,000.
The man was arrested and is due to be brought before judicial authorities to determine coercive measures. The investigation, led by the Santarém prosecutor's office, continues.
This kind of case shows exactly why sextortion is so hard to stop: caught between the fear of public exposure and mounting financial pressure, victims often delay going to police — buying the perpetrator time to collect several payments before ever being identified.
