Stolen €4,000 bicycle found for sale on Wallapop to its own owner

In Spain, a bicycle worth €4,000 was allegedly stolen and then put up for sale on Wallapop for a much lower price, before police arranged a fake purchase to recover it.
A bicycle theft case in Catalonia drew attention after the owner discovered that the same bike, valued at around €4,000, had appeared for sale on Wallapop only a few days after it was stolen. According to the report, the listing price was €1,275, far below its real value, which quickly raised suspicions.
After spotting the ad, the case was taken up by the Mossos d’Esquadra, who organised an operation to recover the bicycle and identify the seller. Officers reportedly posed as interested buyers, exchanged messages through the platform and arranged a meeting with the suspect in Llorenç de Penedès.
During the meeting, police asked the seller for proof of ownership, such as an invoice or purchase document. He allegedly claimed he had bought the bike from a friend a few months earlier, but investigators already had another element that helped confirm the truth.
The bicycle was fitted with a geolocation device worth around €300, which allowed officers to verify that it was the same one stolen days earlier in the Barcelona area. The seller was then arrested and the case was referred to the courts.
The report also notes that the suspect had not only tried to sell the bike on Wallapop, but had also attempted to place it in cycling groups to increase the chances of finding a buyer. Police used the case to remind the public that stolen goods are often resold online at prices far below market value and that suspected listings should be reported to authorities rather than handled directly.
