Three arrested after Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace robberies in Edmonton
Police in Edmonton say three people have been charged after a series of robberies linked to Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace transactions involving phones, computers, fake devices and counterfeit cash.
Police in Edmonton say three people have been arrested and charged in connection with a series of robberies linked to Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace meetups. According to investigators, the incidents took place between late February and early March and often targeted people selling expensive items such as recent iPhones and computer products.
Authorities said the suspects would pose as buyers, meet the seller in person, inspect the item and then steal it. In several cases, the robberies allegedly involved threats, bear spray or the display of a firearm. Police also say some suspects were involved in selling fake iPhones to unsuspecting buyers or using counterfeit money during transactions.
Three adults were charged in relation to eight separate incidents. Police said the combined total was 30 charges. The offences listed include robbery, attempted robbery, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon and disguise with intent.
Investigators say they have received dozens of similar reports since mid-December and believe the crimes are still ongoing. While many cases were reported in specific neighbourhoods, police say these robberies are happening across the city and may involve multiple individuals who are not always linked to one another.
Police are urging people to be cautious when arranging online marketplace meetups. Their recommendations include meeting in public exchange zones during the day, avoiding isolated locations, checking photo identification, keeping screenshots of conversations and listings, and being careful about revealing payment details in advance.
